HTML5 & CSS Positioning

This lecture focuses on core HTML5 semantic elements and CSS layout techniques.

Key concepts covered:

  • Semantic HTML5: The instructor explains the importance of using meaningful tags like header, nav, main, section, article, aside, and footer. These provide structural context for search engines and accessibility tools compared to generic div containers.
  • CSS Positioning: A significant portion of the session covers how to manipulate element placement. This includes:
    • Normal Flow: Understanding the default document structure.
    • Position Absolute: Moving elements out of the normal flow, emphasizing that a parent element must be set to position relative to properly contain absolute children.
    • Position Fixed & Sticky: Techniques to keep elements in place while the user scrolls through the page.
    • Z-index: Managing the stacking order of overlapping elements.
  • CSS Backgrounds: Practical methods for handling images, including using the background-image property, controlling repetition, and using background-size: cover for responsive layouts.
  • Interactive Design: The session concludes with a practical guide on building a CSS-only dropdown menu, utilizing nested unordered lists (ul and li), display properties, and the :hover pseudo-class to trigger visibility.
