CSS Flexbox & Responsive Design

This lecture focuses on CSS Flexbox, a powerful layout model used for building modern, responsive web pages. The instructor begins by demonstrating the installation of a Live Server extension in VS Code to enable real-time page reloading during development.

Key Flexbox concepts covered include:

  • Flex Container Properties: The instructor explains how to set up a flex container and use properties like justify-content (to control horizontal alignment) and align-items (to manage vertical alignment across the cross-axis).
  • Handling Wrapping: The flex-wrap property is introduced to allow elements to flow onto multiple lines, ensuring layouts remain functional when content exceeds the container width. The use of align-content is also explained for managing space between these wrapped rows.
  • Flex Item Properties: Detailed guidance is provided on controlling individual item growth and shrinkage using flex-grow (for filling extra space) and flex-shrink (for handling smaller screen constraints). The flex-basis property is presented as an alternative to specifying fixed widths.
  • Practical Application: To apply these skills, the session concludes by building a basic t-shirt product page for an e-commerce website. This project incorporates nested flex containers to organize product images, descriptions, and buttons.

Finally, the instructor introduces the concept of responsive design using media queries, demonstrating how to transition layout directions from rows to columns on smaller mobile screens to ensure the design remains user-friendly.
